COSTA MESA -- After a grueling road trip to start the 2009 season, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team found its way back to the Peterson Gym on Friday and opened its home schedule with an impressive five-game win over Long Beach City.
 
Led by 19 kills apiece from Jake Melone and Nick Kearney and 18 kills from Alex Reis, the Pirates hung on for a 30-28, 30-25, 28-30, 30-24, 15-7 victory over the previously unbeaten Vikings.

SANTA BARBARA -- After a tough start to the 2009 season, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team has rebounded with back-to-back road wins against Santa Monica and Santa Barbara.

Men's Volleyball: Pirates fall to IVC in State Championship
 
IRVINE -- It was going to take a near-perfect match by the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team against Irvine Valley on Saturday night.
 
A near-perfect match did occur, but unfortunately for the visiting Pirates, it was the defending state champion Lasers who delivered it. The end result was a 30-24, 30-23, 30-19 sweep and a successful title defense for IVC, leaving the Pirates the state's runner-up.

Men's Volleyball: Pirates top Corsairs to earn trip to State Championship!
 
IRVINE -- For the first time since 2002, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team will be playing for the state championship, thanks to Thursday night's four-game win over Santa Monica City College in the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships, held at Irvine Valley College.
 
Led by Kevin Welch's 27 kills, the Pirates topped the Corsairs, 30-25, 31-29, 26-30, 30-20. They will take on defending state champion Irvine Valley on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Irvine Valley College.

Men's Volleyball: Pirates punch return ticket to Final Four!
 
COSTA MESA -- In a season filled with ups and downs, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team still ended up where it wanted to at the end of the season -- at the State Final Four.
 
That ticket was officially punched on Tuesday as the Pirates outlasted visiting Santa Barbara City College, 25-30, 30-16, 32-30, 30-27 in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. With the win, OCC (14-6) will take on Santa Monica City College (11-5) in the State Semifinals on Thursday at Irvine Valley College, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Men's Volleyball: Pirates to host Santa Barbara in SoCal Regionals
 
COSTA MESA -- For the second time this season, the Orange Coast College Pirates and Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros will get together for a men’s volleyball match at OCC’s Peterson Gym.

However, the stakes in this match are slightly higher than in their previous meeting back on Feb. 15 as the Pirates and Vaqueros set to face in on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Men's Volleyball: Welch sets another kills record as Pirates sweep past San Diego City
 
COSTA MESA -- Much like a typical fish-catching story, Kevin Welch will be able to further fabricate his record-setting kill to his friends and family as each year passes by on the calendar.
 
However, for the record, Welch's 390th kill, which places the sophomore outside hitter atop the OCC single-season list, was a back-row dink that grazed off a San Diego City blocker and trickled down to the floor, barely making a noise as it landed.

COSTA MESA -- It was one of the most anticipated home matches on Orange Coast College's schedule and in the end, the match lived up to the hype.
 
In the end, it was the defending state champion Irvine Valley College Lasers winning, but not after being pushed to the brink in a five-game thriller. The Pirates lost the first two games, won the next two and led late in Game 5, but the Lasers used a late run to hold off the hosts, 30-24, 30-24, 30-32, 25-30, 15-13 on Wednesday night.

COSTA MESA -- The OCC men's volleyball team wanted a "lights out" performance during Friday's home return against Grossmont and the electric company gave it to them, literally. 
 
A power outage in the Peterson Gym delayed the start of the match, but when the power was finally restored, it was a nice homecoming for the Pirates as they defeated the Griffins 30-22, 30-22, 28-30, 30-22 in Pacific Coast Conference action.

Following the same script they followed back on Feb. 21, the Pirates responded with three wins in the next three games to advance to the State Semifinals by topping Santa Monica, 17-30, 36-38, 30-28, 30-20, 16-14.

Coast hires Travis Turner as new men's volleyball coach
 
COSTA MESA - For Travis Turner, all he knows how to do at Orange Coast College is win.
As a player, he helped the Pirates claim back-to-back state volleyball titles in 1989 and 1990 under the guidance of Bob Wetzel.
Now, Turner returns to OCC as the new head coach of the men's volleyball team, taking over for Chuck Cutenese, who stepped down after a 14-year run at the helm.
